Freeware and Shareware Smalltalks

In the past, the Smalltalk world suffered from a disturbing lack of high-quality freely available development environments. Over the last few years, this situation has changed dramatically. Some of these free Smalltalks are non-commercial versions of commercial products, some are discontinued versions that have been placed into the public domain, and some are open-source products.

Whether you're interested in learning Smalltalk with a minimal investment, working with Smalltalk in your off hours, or just playing around, any of these Smalltalks will serve you well.

In addition to these freeware and shareware Smalltalks, several commercial Smalltalk vendors offer evaluation copies of their commercial products.

Squeak - Some of the greatest Smalltalk minds on the planet are working on this open source Smalltalk. It is a direct descendent of Smalltalk-80.
LearningWorks - The quintessential Smalltalk learning environment.
VisualWorks Non-Commercial - Completely free, until you decide to SELL your creations.
Gemstone Non-Commercial - A free version of Gemstone for Linux!
Dolphin Smalltalk - Free, but you can't produce a stand-alone executable without paying.
Smalltalk Express - In a previous life, this Smalltalk was sold as Digitalk Smalltalk/V version 2.0 for Windows.
Pocket Smalltalk - Got a Palm Pilot that wants to talk small?
Smalltalk/X - Free for educational use, runs on various Unixes. (Unices?)
GNU Smalltalk - Primitive, but open-source.
